Team profile
The Italian women's junior team in recent seasons has obtained many prestigious results especially at continental level.
Their best result at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Junior World Championship is the silver medal they won in 1997 in Gdansk, Poland after they lost a tie-breaker against Russia. In 2009, Italy did not participate in the tournament but are back this time around.
At European level, the Italian girls have won six titles: Turkey 1996, Vilvoorde 1998, Presov 2004, Croatia 2006, Italy 2008 and finally in Serbia 2010.
In addition to their gold medal wins Italy has collected four silver medals (1984, 1988, 1994, 2000) and one bronze (1992).
Coach profile
Marco Mencarelli joined the staff of the senior women's Italy team in 2001 as assistant coach, helping them clinch victory at the 2002 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship in Berlin and silver at the 2001 European Championships in Bulgaria. In 2005 he led Italy to a bronze medal in the Mediterranean Games.
Since 2006, Mencarelli has coached the Italian women’s junior team and won three consecutive European Championships: France 2006, Italy 2008 and Serbia 2010.
He also helped his side to a fifth place finish at the last World Championship in Thailand.
