Tijuana, Mexico, July 24, 2009 – China scored a 26-24, 25-11, 25-18 victory advancing to the match for ninth position.
Li Weiwei topped China with 14 points and Liu Xiaotong and Sun Mingjian contributed 12 and 11 respectively. Alexandra Hunt paced USA with a match-high 15 tallies and Alexis Olgard added 12.
The first set between China and USA was pretty evened with USA leading 8-5 and then China in front 16-13. USA tied the score at 22 with spike by Frederick but China responded with two consecutive aces by Sun Mingjian. The Americans answered back with spike by Hunt and tied with attacking error of Yuan Caixia. Zhang gave China the lead again and Hunt landed her spike on the net for the 26-24 China’s win.
China completely dominated USA leading to the two technical stops. The Chinese led 8-2 and 16-6 with some strong serves. When the action resumed, Zhang Yicham scored with one ace followed by spike and block from Liu Xiaotong and Li Weiwei. China continued with the same rhythm and finally closed the set 25-11.
China led 8-5 in the third set but USA slowly but steadily could tie the score at 13-all with Alexandra Hunt leading the way with her strong offense. Spike by Li Weiwei folloed by an American error gave back the lead to China 16-14. Consecutive spikes by Liu Xiaotong and Sun Mingjian expanded the China’s lead to 19-15. Block by Sun and ace by Wang Na increased the gap to six points. The set finished 25-18 with spike by Sun Mingjian.
