Thailand overcomes Venezuela in five sets


Tijuana, Mexico, July 24, 2009 – Thailand came back from two sets down to defeat Venezuela 22-25, 24-26, 25-21, 25-20, 15-13.

Thailand had five players with double-figures in Siriporn Ketsanoi (19), Tadarat Thongsai-or (17), Sontaya Keawbundit (16) and Nutchalee Suksomklin and Surasawadee Boonyuen with 10 apiece. Mariangel Perez, Wendy Romero and Roslandy Acosta had 27, 16 and 13 respectively for Venezuela.

Venezuela took advantage of Thailand’s errors to take an 8-6 lead in the first set. Thongsai-or and Keawbundit each had two points for Thailand. Three spikes by Perez expanded the distance to 11-7 but Thailand recovered with spike of Thongsai-or sandwiched by two Venezuelan’s mistakes for an 11-10 score. Venezuela then won five of the next seven points for a 16-12 advantage led by Perez. Thailand came back to take the lead 19-18 relying on three straight aces by Saniktlang. Spike by Perez and block of Acosta tied it for Venezuela at 22-all. Consecutives wild attacks of Thailand followed by spike of Perez closed the set 25-22 in favor of Venezuela.

Keawbundit landed two spikes sending Thailand in front 8-7. Venezuela evened the score behind a kill by Acosta but Ketsanoi scored two straight spikes for a Thailand advantage 12-10 and 16-13 lead at the second pause. Then it was Perez persistent offense for Venezuela to take the second set 26-24.

Venezuela led 8-7 at the first technical time-out but Thailand came back with strong serves and good defensive plays to take the lead 16-14 at the second stop. The Thais didn’t stop and went on to win the set with the consistent offense and coordinated defensive game. The set finished 25-21.

Thailand sent the match to a tie-breaker by winning also the fourth set. The threesome of Thongsai-or, Keaubundit and Ketsanoi led the offense. The Thais led 8-7 and 16-12. Boonyuen contributed to the victory 25-20.

Venezuela took a slight lead 8-7 in the tie-breaker. Perez and Romero recorded two points apiece and Brito blocked for the advantage. Thailand evened up with an opponent error and teams remained in a close battle. At 12-all, Suksomklin scored and Romero hit a spike too wide for a two-point lead for Thailand. Venezuela closed in via spike of Romero but Sumsoklin again produced for Thailand and the victory 15-13.
