Tijuana, Mexico, July 22, 2009 – USA defeated Venezuela in straight sets to qualify in second place of Pool H for 9-to-16 positions. The score was 25-12, 25-17, 27-25.
Sarah Shaw topped the Americans with 12 tallies and Alexis Olgard and Alexandra Hunt chipped in 11 and 10 points. Mariangel Perez and Wendy Romero charted 11 and 10 for Venezuela.
The strong blocking allowed USA the lopsided victory 25-12 in the first set. The Americans led 8-5 and 16.8 at the technical time-outs. Amanda Dowdy led the USA with 6 points and her side outscored Venezuela 4-1 in the blocking category.
Alexandra Hunt led the early attack of USA in the second set good for an 8-4 advantage. The second stop found the Americans leading 16-9 but they started a period of inconsistency that allowed Venezuela to cut the distance at 17-13. USA recovered in time and with a renewed strong blocking won the set 25-17.
In the third set the Americans took the lead 8-6 but Mariangel Perez and Wendy Romero led a Venezuela reaction combined with instability of the opponent for a 16-14 advantage. USA came back to tie the score and at 25-all, a Venezuelan mistake and a service ace from Cook closed the set and the match 27-25.
