Tijuana, Mexico, July 21, 2009 – Cuba swept Kenya 25-16, 25-16, 25-19 evening its record at 1-1 in Pool G of second round for places 9-16 of the Women’s Junior World Championship. The Kenyans fell down to 0-2.
Gyselle Silva, Anay Hernandez and Yudith Pumariega paced Cuba with 14, 12 and 11 points respectively. Everlyne Makuto had 9 for Kenya.
Cuba won the first set 25-16 after leading at the technical stops by score of 8-5 and 16-10. The Cubans dominated the less experienced Kenyan players with blocking and overall defense. Besides that, the hammers of Yudith Pumariega, Gyselle Silva and Anay Hernandez were always present during the whole opening frame.
The second set was not different from the previous one as Cuba led 8-4 and 16-8 even though Coach Joel Olazabal used many of his bench players. Silva continued to pound spikes with Hernandez adding a couple of blocks. The set finished also 25-16.
The Cubans took an 8-1 lead in the third set and then relaxed too much allowing the opponent to close the gap in the second technical time-out at 16-10.
