Germany improves to 2-0 in Pool B

Tijuana, Mexico, July 17, 2009 – Germany claimed its second victory in as many outings in Pool B of the FIVB Women’s Junior World Championship after defeating Czech Republic in straight sets by score of 25-20, 25-13, 25-22. The Czechs dropped to 0-2.

Janine Volker and Sarah Petrausch topped Germany with 12 and 11 points respectively while Berit Kauffeldt and Anja Brandt added 9 and 8. Czech Tereza Vanzurova, who had 29 points the day before, was stopped and finished with only 6 points.

Czech Republic led 8-7 at the first technical time-out led by the offense of Kvapilova and Svobodnikova, but Germany made a steady climb carried by Petrausch and led 16-13 at the second mandatory pause. Melicharkova kept her Czech side in competition but Germany improved its game even more and Kaufeldt was hitting hard late in the set for the 25-20 win.

The second set saw Germany in front 8-4 at the first pause taking advantage of several unforced errors of the opponent. The attacks of Petrausch and Volker led to a 16-10 advantage in the second stop. The balanced German offense continued the rest of the set with improved service game to win it 25-13.

Germany took the lead 8-4 in the third set with steady overall performance. Two spikes of Volker started the Germans. The Czechs tied at 9-9 with a block from Honkova but Germany answered back with three consecutive blocks by Petrausch, Brandt and Mollers for a 12-9 lead. The Czechs came back towed by Vanzurova to tie at 15-all but Volker kept Germany in front 16-15. The Czcech returned to retake the lead behind Honkova and Vincourova but Petrausch tied at 18 with two kills. One block by Kauffeldt broke a tie at 21-21 and Germany went on to win 25-22.
