With the result, Egypt adds its first three points in Pool C of the tournament, while the German team remain pointless. Russia and India, who have three points each, will face each other later today.
With 18 points, including a remarkable total of 11 blocks, Egyptian middle blocker Mohamed El Askolany was the top scorer of the match. German captain Björn Höhne contributed to his team with 16 points, while opposite Simon Hirsch scored 14.
Germany lost its main player, opposite Hirsch, injured early in the match, but the team did not feel it and went to the first technical timeout with an 8-4 lead after a quick spike of middle blocker Oskar Klingner. Led by middle blocker Mohamed El Askolany, Egypt started its reaction and was only two points behind in the second TTO (16-14), before tying the set 23-23. A wrong spike of replacing opposite Paul Sprung assured the African win in 26-24.
The turnaround motivated the Egyptian, who achieved an early 9-5 lead in the second set through outside hitter Eslam El Hassan. Making several mistakes, the German made the partial easy for the African despite the return of Hirsch, and Egypt sealed its win with a spike out of Germany captain Björn Höhne: 25-20.
With two sets behind, Germany started playing better and scored 6-4 in third set after a serve point of Hirsch. When the scoreboard showed 12-8 to the European, Egyptian head coach Mohamed Ellakany asked for a timeout. Led by captain Höhne, Germany kept ahead until the end and closed the set 25-22 with a second ball of setter Jan Zimmermann.
In the fourth set, Germany managed to quickly assure a two-point-lead in the beginning of th frame (5-3) and sustained it until the second technical timeout. With two points of El Askolany and a mistake of Hirsch, Egypt took the lead in 17-16. In the end, the African closed the match with captain Moustafa Idris: 25-23.
In the third match of Pool C, Egypt will face India, this Wednesday, at 10:00 a.m. In the following match, which starts at 12:30, there will be an European clash between Germany and Russia.
