Team profile

The USA Men’s Junior National Volleyball Team, ranked ninth in the world by the FIVB, will make its fourth consecutive appearance at the FIVB Junior World Championships from August 1 to 10 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

It is the sixth year that the United States has qualified for the event. In 1977 and 1981, the United States placed seventh. After a 24-year absence, the USA returned in 2005, posting a record of 2-5 and finished eighth. In 2007, the United States placed seventh again under head coach Andy Read. In 2009, coach Shawn Patchell led the team to an eighth-place finish.

The Americans earned a spot in the 2011 championship by winning the 2010 NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. The team went 5-0 and defeated host Canada in the final. The team did not lose a set in the tournament.

Ten players from that team will compete in the 2011 Men’s Junior World Championship. New players to the team are libero Henry Cassiday and setter Connor Olbright. Coach John Hawks also returns to lead the team into the World Championship.

Coach profile

John Hawks recently completed his third season as assistant coach for the men’s volleyball team at Long Beach State University in California. He has also served as an assistant coach at USC and UC Irvine.

Hawks was the head coach of the US men's junior team that won the 2010 NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. The team went 5-0 and did not lose a set in the tournament, defeating hosts Canada in the final.

Hawks has also served as an assistant coach for the US men’s senior team in the FIVB Volleyball World League numerous times.

In May 2008, Hawks headed up a small group of USA National Team players that trained in Japan, successfully helping the Japanese to qualify for the Olympic Games in Beijing. In June 2008, Hawks spent time as an assistant to US men’s coach Alan Knipe with the team at the Pan American Cup in Winnipeg, Canada, where the Americans won gold and qualified for the America's Cup.

He was also an assistant to Andy Read for the USA boys' youth team, which went undefeated at the NORCECA Youth Continental Championship en route to the gold medal and qualification for the 2009 FIVB Volleyball Boys' Youth World Championship.
