Unilever Volei and Guangdong Evergrande open Women’s Club World Champs with straight-set wins

Asian club champions Guangdong Evergrande celebrate their straight-set win over Kenya Prisons on day one of the 2013 FIVB Women's Club World Championship in Zurich, Switzerland.

Zurich, Switzerland, October 9, 2013 – Unilever Volei from Brazil and Guangdong Evergrande from China booked two straight-set triumphs on day one of the 2013 FIVB Women’s Club World Championship in Zurich, Switzerland. Unilever Volei jumped out for a straight-set win (25-14, 25-16, 25-22) versus Iowa Ice (USA) to start their 2013 FIVB Women’s Club World Champs campaign in style while Asian club champions Guangdong Evergrande outclassed Kenya Prisons 3-0 (25-14, 25-11, 25-13) as well.

The African champions could not deal with the speed and power the Asian stars displayed. Guangdong Evergrande set the pace with their sharp serves and consistent offense. Ting Zhu was the top scorer of the match with 14 points. Captain Ruoqi Hui and Megan Hodge helped her side with 12 kills each. Everlyne Makuto booked 12 points for Kenya Prisons. The Africans committed 18 errors while Evergrande had only five. The Asians added seven aces and six block winners to their records.

Guangdong Evergrande coach Lang Ping: “I’m satisfied with the performance of my team. There were some communication problems between the players during the game, but we could help out. We want to keep our game simple as we haven’t had a lot of time to prepare. Our goal for the next game is to improve on connections setter-hitter.”

Kenya Prisons coach David Lungah Mutsami: “I think we didn't play on our best level, but anyway I'm happy how my team performed against a very strong opponent. Evergrande is one of the best teams in the world, and at some moments I was really happy to see what my girls did, especially the outside hitters. Everything was very tactical and suddenly, the Asians changed completely their style of playing. So I'm also willing to learn, especially from coaches like Lang Ping.”

In Wednesday’s first match in Zurich’s Saalsporthalle, Unilever Volei proved too strong for Iowa Ice from the United States of America. Bernardinho’s team swept the US team 25-14, 25-16, 25-22. Best scorer of the match was Unilever’s middle blocker Juciely with 12 points. Megan Schipper and Brittney Brimmage helped their side with 8 kills each. Unilever Volei scored 47 times in attack, Iowa Ice had only 23 spike winners.

Unilever Volei captain Fofão: “My team-mates played really well, but we committed many unforced errors. We hope to improve for the next game. Some players hadn’t trained with the team before, but our automatisms are going to get better and better.”

Iowa Ice captain Megan Schipper: “It's a different game from what we were used to. They had a lot of hard driven balls, they had a lot of height. We were not used to seeing teams with that much height over in America. We were a little bit timid at first which is something you can't be when you’re playing at that level. So it took us a little bit, but we got going. We finally got our feet under us and certainly played better at the end.”

The competition resumes on Thursday with VakifBank Istanbul taking on Iowa Ice (17.:0 local time) before Kenya Prisons challenge host Volero Zurich (20:30).
