Evergrande, Zhetyssu maintain their form at the 14th Asian Women’s Club Championship


Blue Cats' Eri Iyonaga tries to drop over the Chinese blockers

Dac Lac, Vietnam, April 30, 2013 – Evergrande of China and Zhetyssu from Kazakhstan have continued their winning streak with a second victory at the 14th Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship. The eight teams currently participating in the Asian Championship are all vying for the lone ticket to the FIVB World Women's Club Championship to be held in Switzerland in October.

After two days of preliminaries, Kazakhstan’s Zhetyssu remained at the top of Pool A with five points from two wins, while Guangdong Evergrande of China have yet to lose a set and lead Pool B with six points.

The participating Asian clubs include Zhetyssu (Kazakhstan); Giti Pasand (Iran); Idea Khonkaen (Thailand); Guangdong Evergrande (China); Bo Tong Gang (DPR Korea); Lienvit Postbank (Vietnam); Taipei (Chinese Taipei); and PFU Blue Cats (Japan).   
 
Pool A

Zhetyssu (Kazakhstan) defeat Lienviet Postbank (Vietnam): 3-2 (27-25, 23-25, 23-25, 25-16, 15-10)

In Tuesday’s match between Zhetyssu and Lienviet Postback, the Kazakhs – led by Tatyana Pyurova and Yelena Pavlova – struggled hard in the first set while the hosts displayed excellent teamwork. As the Vietnamese closed the margin 25-25, the Kazakhs counter-attacked relentlessly to win the remaining two points of the closely-contested set with a score of 27-25.

The Vietnamese side stormed back to win the next two sets 25-23, 25-23 but lost their touch in the following two sets to come out with unforced spiking errors. Zhetyssu came back to win the fourth set 25-16 and 15-10 in the tiebreaker for a 3-2 victory.   

Tatyana Pyurova was the top scorer for Zhetyssu with 21 points while Pham Thi Yen scored 19 points for Lienviet Postbank.

Taipei (Chinese Taipei) defeat Idea Khonkaen (Thailand): 3-1 (25-18 25-18 17-25 25-20)

The Thai team of Idea Khonkaen failed to make their mark against Taipei in the first two sets of the match. The Thais regrouped to take the third set 25-17 but Taipei eventually won the fourth set 25-20 and the match.

Chen Wan-Ting scored a match-high of 24 points for Taipei while Tapaphaipun Chaisri collected 14 points for Idea Khonkaen.

Pool B

Evergrande (China) defeat PFU Blue Cats (Japan): 3-0 (25-12 25-18 25-13)

Tuesday’s match at the Buon Ma Thuot Gymnasium saw Guangdong Evergrande win comfortably against rivals PFU Blue Cats in straight sets. The match lasted 59 minutes as hitter Katarzyna Ewa Skowronska Dolata (Poland) and Carolina Del Pilar (Italy) helped the Chinese team power past PFU Blue Cats.

Xu Yunli led the Chinese side with 18 points (nine from stuff blocks) while Mao Kawakami scored the highest 13 points for the Blue Cats, 12 of them on account of her attacks.

Bo Tong Gang (DPR Korea) defeat Giti Pasand (Iran): 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-18)


After losing the first two sets 17-25 16-25, Giti Pasand regained their composure in the third set to improve their attack and serve. However, the Koreans continued their winning streak to take the third set 25-18 and the match.

Jong Jin Sim was the lead scorer for Bo Tong Gang with 21 points, while Farnoush Sheikhi top scored 10 points for Giti Pasand.
