Sada Cruzeiro win crown with formidable volleyball show

Sada Cruzeiro's players celebrate their gold medal after the award ceremony on Sunday at Divino Braga Gymnasium

Betim, Brazil, October 20, 2013 – Brazil’s Sada Cruzeiro put an exhibition of volleyball en route to the title at the FIVB Men’s Club World Championship with a dominating victory in straight sets over Russia’s Lokomotiv Novosibirsk 25-20, 25-20, 25-20 in front of 7,200 ardent fans at Divino Braga Gymmasium of Betim on Sunday.

It was a real team-effort from Sada Cruzeiro as they outclassed their opponents in every one of the fundaments while backed by the home crowd.

Cuban Yoandy Leal finished with 13 points, including four aces and one block, as the leader of the balanced attack. Wallace Souza was next with 12 while middle blockers Douglas Cordeiro and Eder Carbonara contributed 11 and 10, respectively.

Setter William Arjona played his best match of the tournament and libero Sergio Nogueira played exceptional defense.

Sada Cruzeiro held advantages of 7-2 and 6-3 in blocks and aces, respectively, and outscored Lokomotiv in attacks by a wide margin of 40-24.

“We played at an excellent level,” Sada Cruzeiro’s coach Marcelo Mendez said before the award ceremony. “It was an exceptional game for us in all the fundaments. The serve was our main weapon and we were able to control the game starting from it.”

Mendez praised the performance of Cuban Yoandy Leal who took charge in the third set with three incredible big serves when Sada Cruzeiro trailed for the first time in the whole contest.

“He had a sensational streak in the third set and was like a booster for our confidence,” Mendez said.

Lokomotiv Alexander Butko commented about the home crowd factor during the game and gave all the credit to Sada Cruzeiro.

“It was a lesson for us,” Butko said. “This is a new team and for the first time taking part in a world championship, coming out in second place is good for the team.”

“Sada Cruzeiro played sensational volleyball and the fans are like a seventh player,” Butko added. “They are good fans and really helped their team.”

Trentino Diatec of Italy defeated UPCN of Argentina 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-21, 25-19) in the match for the bronze medal.

Tsvetan Sokolov recovered from a slow start to lead the scoring charts of the winners with 20 points, followed by Filippo Lanza’s 16 tallies. Michele Fedrizzi, who was not in the starting lineup, contributed 13 points, while Emanuele Birarelli and Sebastian Sole chipped in with 12 and 11, respectively.

Theo Lopes and Martin Ramos were the only two players of UPCN who reached double digits in the scores with 18 and 10, respectively.

Trentino outblocked UPCN 13-5 with Birarelli and Sole each registering five blocks. En route to the victory the Italian team overcame their 35 unforced errors.
