Zurich, Switzerland, May 7, 2014- Volero Zurich electrified their hometown crowd with a marathon five-set comeback win against heavy favourites Pool A rivals Brazil's SESI-SP (25-12, 25-18, 15-25, 15-25, 15-10) in 110 minutes at Saalsporthalle in Zurich, Switzerland on Wednesday.
After Volero won the first and second sets in style, SESI came back successfully with all volleyball skills to win two successive sets, until Volero again exploded in the tiebreak to win the thrilling encounter with the extraordinary finish.
With her unbelievable performance Volero's opposite attacker Olesia Rykhliuk scored impressive 25 points for her team including 2 blocks making the competition best scoring performance so far to come as match scorer followed by Kenia Carcaces 13 points. The Marvelous middle blocker Fabiana Claudino contributed 14 points for her team.
Supported by the home crowd, Volero surprised their opponents with a well disciplined start using all the powerful weapons to score against the Brazilian team. The setter Courtney Thompson conducted her team with her skillful combinations using the front and backlines rows in spiking. Opposite spiker Olesia Rykhliuk did a fantastic job in spiking from position 2 as she succeeded to penetrate SESI's block frequently towards 8-4 lead in the FTT. The disturbed SESI defence led to more aggressive lead for the home team after good blocking activity led by Captain Mira Golubovic in the way to widen the point deficit to 16-7. Volero continued their superior action to win the set 25-12.
The second set showed early resistance from SESI who led 8-6 for the first time in the match at first TTO 8-6 following successful spikes from Suelle Oliveira and active blocking from Captain Fabiana Claudino. Valero reversed the score in the second TTO and led 16-12. Volero dominated the match again with impressive performance from all the players to win the set 25-18 and lead 2-0.
SESI showed fantastic come back in the third set as they regained their well known rhythm in defence and attacks and middle blocker Fabiana Claudino started to do a good job in quick attacks as they double the score 8-4 at the FTT. Suelle Oliveira did also a good job in attacks using the bad reception from the home team to lead 16-13. Volero dropped psychologically to lose points with their mistakes allowing SESI to win the set 25-1 to narrow the score to 2-1 for Volero.
SESI started the fourth set in the same rhythm and surprised Volero with a different style of playing as they depended on the quick attacks through Fabiana and the proper deceiving by Suelle Oliveira to lead 8-4 and then 16-11 at TTOs. Volero tried to come back and save the set through the usual activity of the match scorer Olesia, but SESI were in the utmost performance to win the set 25-15 to extend the match to tiebreak.
Volero had a great come back at the beginning of the set through their better blocking and backline defence as they led 8-4 at the court turn through the spikes of the of Suelle. SESI came back aggressively through their blockers where they succeeded to overcome the point deficit to draw 10-10. Volero aided by fantastic home spectators scored 5 successive points which ended by a fantastic spike from the match star Olesia Rykhliuk who ended the Marathon 15-10 and the match 3-2.
