Ten teams to contest Asian Women's Club Championship after Turkmenistan withdrawal

Thailand's Nakhonratchasima are targetting a top-four finish in front of their home fans

Bangkok, Thailand, March 31, 2014 – The Turkmenistan Volleyball Federation has withdrawn their team from the Asian Women's Club Volleyball Championship in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, leaving 10 teams to vie for the Princess Cup and a FIVB World Club Championship berth.

With just over a month ahead of the start of the tournament on April 17, Turkmenistan’s Federation cited safety concerns as their main reason for withdrawing.

“Their government asked their people not to travel to two countries, Thailand and Ukraine, where there are on-going protests. We tried to reassure them, but they continued with their decision to withdraw,” Shanrit Wongprasert, the tournament technical delegate said.

The tournament is due to take place at the Nakhon Pathom Municipality Gymnasium from April 17 to 25 with the winner earning a spot at the FIVB World Women's Club Volleyball Championship in Zurich from May 7 to 11.

The withdrawal has resulted in a change to the match schedule. Pool A now has only four teams comprising hosts Thailand (Nakhonratchasima VC), Japan (Hisamitsu Springs), Iran (team yet confirmed) and Vietnam (Thong Tin Lienvietpostbank).

Pool B will be made up of six teams; Kazakhstan (team yet confirmed), China (Bohai Bank Tianjin), India (KSEB), Chinese Taipei (Taipei), Singapore (VAS) and the Philippines (PLDT).
