FIVB Club World Championship qualifiers move closer to completion

This year’s FIVB Men’s Club World Championship event will take place at the inspirational Mineirinho Arena, in Belo Horizonte city, Brazil

Lausanne, Switzerland, March 31, 2014 – After another thrilling week of qualifier action, the African continent representative, Esperance from Tunisia has become the fifth team to take its place at this year’s FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship.

Esperance of Tunisia claimed the 2014 Men's African Club Championship title on Saturday following a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-14) victory over Ahly of Egypt, who were hoping to win their 11th championship title. Following Sfax’s participation in last year’s tournament, this will be the second time a team from Tunisia will participate in the FIVB Men’s Club World Championship since 2009. It was Esperance’s fourth championship to go with the titles they won in 1994, 1998 and 2000.

Esperance (Tunisia) joins the continental champions from Europe, Belogorie Belgorod of Russia as well as the defending champions, host country club and winner of the South American Men’s Club Championship Brazil’s Sada Cruzeiro. UPCN of Argentina also qualified for the event as runner-up of the South American Men’s Club Championship. Joining the line-up is Guyanabo Met (Puerto Rico) who were nominated by NORCECA to be the confederation’s representative at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship that will take place in Belo Horizonte, Brazil from May 5 to 10.

With the Africa qualification tournaments completed, only three out of eight teams are still to be decided.

The Asian continental champion will be decided in Manila, Philippines from April 8 to 16 with the winner of the 2014 Men’s Asian Club Championship assured of a place at the FIVB Men’s Club World Championship.

The participation of two teams –jointly decided by the FIVB and the organisers – will complete the line-up of clubs taking part in the Championship.

FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship

To date only three of the six teams scheduled to take part in the FIVB Women’s Volleyball Club World Championship have been decided.

Dinamo Kazan earned their place in the World Championship event after winning the European title at the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Women in Baku, Azerbaijan. They join host club Volero Zurich and Brazil’s SESI-SP who won the 14th edition of the Women’s South American Club Championship in February at the FIVB Volleyball Women's World Club Championship from May 7 to 11 in Zurich, Switzerland.

The Asia representative will be decided at the 2014 Women's Asian Club Championship that will be held from April 17 to 25 in Nakhonpathom, Thailand. A further two teams – jointly decided by the FIVB and the organisers – will complete the line-up of clubs taking part in the Championship.

This year’s FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship will feature six teams as in the previous editions except for the first two in 1991 and 1992, which saw eight teams compete.

Unlike the Men’s Club World Championship, the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship has had seven different winners from four different countries. Brazil has been represented on the winner’s podium three times, while Azerbaijan, Italy and Turkey have all had clubs step on top of the podium once.

The FIVB Volleyball Club World Championship for men and women will be the first FIVB volleyball events of the year.
