FIVB Volleyball Club World Championships roster grows with conclusion of European qualifiers

Lausanne, Switzerland, March 24, 2014 – With another set of qualification tournaments brought to an end on Sunday, Russia’s Belogorie Belgorod became the third of eight teams to qualify for the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship following their title win at the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League in Ankara.

Belogorie Belgorod join defending champions, host country club and winner of the South American Men’s Club Championship Brazil’s Sada Cruzeiro. UPCN of Argentina will also take part in the World Championship this year as  runner-up of the South American Men's Club Championship.

This year’s tournament will comprise the Continental Champion teams from South America, Europe, Africa and Asia in addition to the NORCECA nominated team. The participation of two teams – jointly decided by the FIVB and the organisers – will complete the line-up of clubs taking part in the Championship.

With the men’s African qualifiers currently underway in Sousse, Tunisia, four more teams secured their tickets to the quarterfinal of the 2014 Men's African Club Championship on Sunday: Etoile du Sahel (Tunisia) and Borj Bou Aririj (Algeria) will take part in Pool A while Setif (Algeria) and Sfax (Tunisia) will join Pool B. Four more slots will be determined for pools C and D on when the competition resumes on Monday.

Manila, Philippines will host the 2014 Men’s Asian Club Championship from April 8 to 16, where one of the 18 participating teams will also secure a ticket to the FIVB Men’s Club World Championship. NORCECA will appoint one team, with the other two vacancies decided jointly by the FIVB and organiser.

FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship

A third team was added to the six team line-up for the FIVB Women’s Volleyball Club World Championship when Dinamo Kazan took the European title at the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Women in Baku, Azerbaijan eight days ago.

The Russian team is the latest to receive a ticket to the premier women’s club volleyball tournament, after defeating last year’s European and Club World champions VakifBank Istanbul 3-0 (25-23, 25-11, 25-23). Rabita Bakz claimed the bronze medal of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League when they defeated Turkey’s Eczacibasi Vitra Istanbul, 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 27-25)

Dinamo Kazan joined host club Volero Zurich and Brazil’s SESI-SP who won the 14th edition of the Women’s South American Club Championship in February at the FIVB Volleyball Women's World Club Championship.

The Asia representative will be decided at the 2014 Women's Asian Club Championship that will be held from April 17 to 25 in Nakhonpathom, Thailand. A further two teams – jointly decided by the FIVB and the organisers – will complete the line-up of clubs taking part in the Championship.

This year’s FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship will feature six teams as in the previous editions except for the first two in 1991 and 1992, which saw eight teams compete.

Unlike the Men’s Club World Championship, the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship has had seven different winners from four different countries. Brazil has been represented on the winner’s podium three times, while Azerbaijan, Italy and Turkey have all had clubs step on the top podium once.

Last year’s tournament saw VakifBank Istanbul graduate from European to world champions in front of a packed Saalsporthalle in Zurich. The Turkey representatives beat their South American counterparts Unilever Volei from Brazil in straight sets 3-0 (25-23, 27-25, 25-16) to capture their first ever FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship title.

The FIVB Volleyball Club World Championship for men and women will be the first FIVB volleyball events of the year.

The FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship begins a day before the women’s event, on May 5 to 10 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championships begins May 7 to 11 in Zurich, Switzerland.
