Lausanne, Switzerland, March 13, 2014 – By the end of this weekend, the third of six teams to compete in the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship will be known as the Final Four of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Women is set to get underway in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The Final Four competition – which will take place on March 15 and 16 – will see VakifBank Istanbul (Turkey), Rabita Baku (Azerbaijan), Dinamo Kazan (Russia), and Eczacibasi Vitra Istanbul (Turkey) compete for a chance to become European champion and win a place at the eighth edition of the Club World Championship tournament that will be held from May 7 to 11 in the Swiss city of Zurich.
Last year’s tournament saw VakifBank Istanbul graduate from European to world champions in front of a packed Saalsporthalle in Zurich. The Turkey representatives beat their South American counterparts Unilever Volei from Brazil in straight sets 3-0 (25-23, 27-25, 25-16) to capture their first ever FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship title.
The winners of this year’s European Champions will join host club Volero Zurich and Brazil’s SESI-SP who won the 14th edition of the Women’s South American Club Championship in February at the World Club Championship event.
The Asia representative will be decided at the 2014 Women's Asian Club Championship that will be held from April 17 to 25 in Nakhonpathom, Thailand. A further two teams – jointly decided by the FIVB and the organisers – will complete the line-up of clubs taking part in the Championship.
This year’s FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship will feature six teams as in the previous editions except for the first two in 1991 and 1992, which saw eight teams compete.
Unlike the Men’s Club World Championship, the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship has had seven different winners from four different countries. Brazil has been represented on the winner’s podium three times, while Azerbaijan, Italy and Turkey have all had clubs step on the top podium once.
The upcoming Final Four tournament of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Women will be easy to enjoy in real time not only by the thousands of spectators, expected to flock to the Crystal Hall in Baku, but also by the millions of volleyball fans worldwide, who will get a chance to watch the games live and to view a live photogallery from the grand event in the Azerbaijani capital.
The four crucial matches of the Final Four will get an extensive live TV coverage across the globe and will be streamed live and free of charge to users worldwide on international sports online television channel LAOLA1.tv.
