Belogorie Belgorod stay unbeaten and reach the semifinals

Three sets were enough for Dmitriy Muserskiy to become the best scorer of the game

Belo Horizonte, Brazil, May 8, 2014 - Belogorie Belgorod from Russia emerged as the only unbeaten team of the FIVB Men’s Club World Championship so far and joined the semifinals after achieving another 3-1 victory (25-21, 22-25, 25-15, 26-24) over Iran’s Matin Varamin, which is now out of the tournament.

Russian Dmitriy Muserskiy, even after playing only three sets, topped the charts of the match with 16 points, followed by captain Taras Khtey with 12. Farhad Piroutpour, who scored 15 times, was the best player in the Iranian side.

Italian coach Daniele Bagnoli rapidly called for a timeout with his team trailing 6-2 against a pumped-up Belgorod. However, Russian captain Taras Khtey overcame the Iranian block at 8-4 and Belogorie easily advanced to 13-8, with Muserskiy already performing well. An ace by setter Vadi and a great block by Pourya Fayazi pulled Matin Varamin closer (15-13), but Muserskiy also blocked to stop their rivals at 16-13. Those three points of distance remained to 20-17, then Maxim Panteleymonenko spiked at 23-19 and finally the set closed by 25-21 after a net fault.

Matin Varamin gave Belogorie a headache with a few floated serves in the second set and got away to 4-1, to hold the lead until an 8-5 score. After the TTO, the European champion climbed back to 8-7, but Alireza Nasr and Piroutpour teamed up and Matin Varamin progressed to 13-11. Mostafa Sharifat added some blocking and the Iranians dominated at 16-14. Belogorie lost their pulse, failed a couple of times and also Piroutpour became unstoppable, spiking the way to 21-17. György Grozer smashed well and their side got just one point behind (22-21), but Matin Varamin caught the set through Fayazi by 25-22.

Three Iranian mistakes in a row opened the third set and Bagnoli tried, as in the first one, to find a reaction, but Belgorod escaped to 7-1. As the Russian grew stronger, the energy on Matin Varamin went down and the set flew by. Muserskiy scored some aces, Grozer joined on the attack and Belogorie easily confirmed the semifinal spot. The set ended by 25-15 after a mistake of Matin Varamin.

Coach Gennady Shipulin decided to use some reserve players for the fourth set: Alexander Kosarev, Alexey Kazakov, Sergey Bagrey and Dmitriy Ilinykh, this one performing as the new lead scorer. Matin Varamin also renewed the team and the set went on tight, but mainly due to a new round of Russian mistakes. Even though the Iranians were behind, they managed to tie the game at the very end, but Belgorod finished the match by a slim 26-24.

Belgorod grabbed this way the first place of Pool A and will face UPCN at the semifinals. Matin Varamin ended their participation in the championship.
