Matin Varamin cruise past Guaynabo Mets to secure first win

Matin Varamin blocked in some key moments of the game to bring down Guaynabo

Belo Horizonte, Brazil, May 7, 2014 - With a solid display overall, Iran’s Matin Varamin celebrated a first win at FIVB Men’s Club World Championship over Guaynabo Mets from Puerto Rico by 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-18).

The result that allow the Asian champions to keep dreaming of the semifinals was based on good numbers of spiker Pourya Fayazi, with 16 points, and opposite player Farhad Piroutpour, who added 14. Leveled with him was Jean Carlos Ortiz, Guaynabo’s top scorer.

Matin Varamin led the first set from the beginning to the end. After seizing some Puerto Rican errors, captain Saeed Mostafavand blocked to put numbers of 13-9, and later setter Mohammad Vadi saved a ball with an overhead kick to carry his team to a 16-11. Piroutpour also performed well as the Asian champions moved on to 19-14. Guaynabo Mets were unable to get closer and a net fault closed the set for Matin Varamin by 25-18.

Saied Shirood pushed his side to a 6-3 lead in the second set and that gap remained to 8-5 and 11-8. However, the Mets brought back the ball from Matin Varamin’s bench and that boosted the team closer (11-9). Ortiz became important for the Puerto Rican as the team managed to level the game at 16-16, but from then on, Matin Varamin found in the block the way to break their opponents. In fact, there was the key to the 2-0 lead: Alireza Nadi entered to block and he, as well as Piroutpour, succeeded at the net for a 25-19.

Taking advantage of some low energy on the Puerto Rican squad, Matin Varamin also prevailed with their blocks to escape to 5-1 in the third chapter. Edwin Montano fired an ace to bring his team closer, but the Iranians had everything under control. Piroutpour and Fayazi enhanced their numbers and the lead grew to 13-6 and 18-11. The opposite also scored in the final track, leading to a handful of match balls at 24-17, and a failed serve from Guaynabo decided the game by 25-18.

While for Guaynabo Mets was the final game of the tournament, Matin Varamin will look for a legendary win against Russian powerhouse Belogorie Belgorod to reach the semifinals.
