Second win for Sada Cruzeiro to almost secure a semifinal berth

In his first match at FIVB Men's Club World Championship, Yoandy Leal performed well for Cruzeiro

Belo Horizonte, Brazil, May 6, 2014 - With some great support at Mineirinho Arena, Sada Cruzeiro grabbed a second win at FIVB Men’s Club World Championship, over Asian champion Matin Varamin from Iran. The home side celebrated 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-21).

Once again, Wallace De Souza proved to be the heart of the team as the opposite uncorked 17 points to lead the charts. Wing spikers Yoandy Leal and Luis Díaz, who came from the bench, added 12 points apiece. Matin Varamin’s top scorer was Farhad Piroutpour, with 10 tallies.

In a very close start, Iran’s team gained a small lead after two wide spikes from Cruzeiro (7-5), and the tight play remained towards a 15-12 score for Matin Varamin. However, Wallace pushed the home team to a tie at 16 and, with a pair of blocks, Sada Cruzeiro took control at 18-16. The Asian champions leveled the scores at 21-21 after a sloppy reception from the Brazilians, but Wallace smashed again and a while later, Isac Santos succeeded down the middle for a well-earned 25-22.

Local star Wallace unveiled a great block in the first moments of the second set and Cuban Leal emulated him in the next ball, for a quick advantage at 4-0. Santos fired another hard spike to lead to the first TTO (8-4) and Sada Cruzeiro, even though it had a hard time in reception, did better and better as the game went on. Wallace also made damage from the service line (13-6) and Matin Varamin had no effective weapons to climb back. The opposite scored his 10th point at 19-11 and both Leal and Luis Díaz joined to seal the deal. The Venezuelan closed the set by 25-16.

Cruzeiro kept rolling and jumped to an 8-6 lead on the third set, even though Italian coach Daniele Bagnoli tried with opposite Tajer and wing spiker Sajadi for Matin Varamin. Díaz provided a block for the home side and Eder Carbonera did the same for another step towards a 13-9 score. Sajadi had a good service streak and narrowed the distance to just one point (15-14), but William Arjona contributed with a key block to bring calm. The board turned into a 19-15 score, but Matin Varamin had another assault ready, as middle-blocker and captain Saeed Mostafavand spiked at 21-20. However, Santos blocked and Luis Díaz stole the show in the end. After two attacks of the Venezuelan, a fault of Iran’s team finished the match by 25-21.

Local team will now collide against Russian powerhouse Belogorie Belgorod, while Matin Varamin has to face Guaynabo Mets from Puerto Rico for its second match.
