Local joy at Mineirinho as Sada Cruzeiro breeze past Guaynabo Mets

Cruzeiro captain William Arjona and teammate Eder Carbonera, in full celebration

Belo Horizonte, Brazil, May 5, 2014 – Defending champion and local team Sada Cruzeiro began in a great way its road at the FIVB Men’s Club World Championship by defeating Guaynabo Mets from Puerto Rico in straight sets (25-18, 25-15, 25-19).

Home opposite Wallace De Souza stood above all players as the only one to reach double figures, with 13 points. Teammates Eder Carbonera and Filipe Ferraz contributed with 8 caps each. Guaynabo’s best scorer appears behind all of them: Jean Carlos Ortiz, who made 7 tallies.

After a sloppy start for his side, with a handful of mistakes, Guaynabo coach Javier Gaspar called for a timeout trailing by three (6-3). However, Sada Cruzeiro kept a high pace and escaped to a 9-5 lead, and Wallace took care of the scoring for the home team from there on, leading to 14-7 with some firm blocking. The Mets had a small momentum there, but Isac Santos spiked at 16-12 to brought calm to his squad. Pumped up with confidence, Sada Cruzeiro improved on attack and also used some opponent errors to easily close the set. Santos again scored down the middle at 25-18.

With a smart serve from setter William Arjona and more blocks from Wallace, Cruzeiro also controlled the second set, rapidly jumping to a 4-1 score. All the effort from the Puerto Rican team wasn’t enough to break the strong home team and the distance grew to 11-6. After the second TTO, which arrived with a 16-9 score, defending champion used some reserve players -setter Raphael Margarido and opposite Paulo Costa- without affecting the game. The board quickly moved from 20-10 into a definitive 25-15, after a serve from Guaynabo went long.

The third time was the charm for Guaynabo, as the NORCECA team opened well the next set, enjoying a 5-2 lead. Sada Cruzeiro, however, climbed back almost immediately, with Wallace and Venezuelan spiker Luis Díaz, regrouping just before the first TTO (8-7). Reducing their errors, the Puerto Ricans were able to stay much closer than before, but Cruzeiro still earned a four-point lead at 16-12. Smoothly and, once again, preserving some of the main players, the blue team reached the victory. A long spike from Guaynabo gave Cruzeiro over six match balls and another wrong ball finished the match by 25-19.

Both teams will return to the court on Tuesday. Sada Cruzeiro will close the day against Matin Varamin from Iran, and before that Guaynabo Mets have to face the European Champion, Belogorie Belgorod.
