Successful opener for Argentina’s UPCN over Esperance Tunis

Olympian Theo Lopes performed well at home soil to lead UPCN to a good start

Belo Horizonte, Brazil, May 5, 2014 – In the opening match of FIVB Men’s Club World Championship in Belo Horizonte, Argentinean team UPCN managed to overcome the final resistance of Esperance Tunis and rounded up a 3-0 win (25-18, 25-18, 27-25).

Brazilian Theo Lopes, who performs for UPCN, topped the charts with 16 points, well sparred by teammate Javier Filardi, who added 12. For the Tunisian team, Hichem Kaabi acted as the main scorer, with 14 tallies, while wing spiker Elyes Karamosly followed him with 10.

With some strong serving of local player Junior, UPCN took the first lead against the Tunisian side by 8-3. Javier Filardi joined the scene later on, as the Argentineans enhanced the score (11-3) and Martín Ramos also fired an ace at 15-6. Esperance tried to turn the tide sending Alexander Sorokoletov to the field and his team improved in the final track, but UPCN anyway sealed the set with a thrilling Junior spike by 25-18.

Tunisian spirit remained strong in the second chapter, forcing UPCN to display their best weapons en-route to an 8-5 score. Led by opposite spiker Kaabi, Esperance managed to stay just one point behind (12-11), but the South American runner-ups relied on Junior and fellow Brazilian Theo to regain control to 19-12. Without further trouble, Theo kept spiking until the definitive 25-18 score.

For the first time in the game, Esperance grabbed the lead, with a fierce defense that held back UPCN (7-6). Even though Theo reappeared, nailing a counterattack and an ace to a 10-10 tie, he was the only one able to score for the blue side and became the key for a 16-12 score. UPCN kept rolling to 20-18, Ramos pulled out a great single block and, although Tunisian team managed a new tie (23-23), Theo spiked to maintain the advantage. A while later, Bogdan Olteanu finished the match by 27-25.

The South American side now will rest on the second day at Belo Horizonte, while Esperance Tunis will face a tough challenge against super-powered Al-Rayyan from Qatar.
