Sada Cruzeiro take Superliga title on their way to Club World Championship in May

Sada Cruzeiro played a Superliga final in front of nearly 20,000 spectators in Mineirinho three years ago

Lausanne, Switzerland, April 15, 2014 – With less than a month to go until the 2014 edition of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship, defending champions Sada Cruzeiro have shown they are a force to be reckoned with having won their fifth accolade of the season - the Brazil Superliga title .

Marcelo Mendez’s men did their coach proud, beating  SESI-SP 3-0 (21-19, 21-17, 21-18) in the final of the Super Liga on Sunday. It is yet another feather in the cap for a team that have won the South American Men’s Club Championship, the Mineiro Championship, the Copa Brasil and the 2013 FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship this season.

Sada Cruzeiro’s victory came in 75 minutes before 14,300 spectators in a match that took place at the inspirational Mineirinho Arena, in Belo Horizonte city, that will also host the FIVB Volleyball Men's Club World Championship from May 5 to 10.

The team’s setter William Arjona was named MVP while the top scorers for the side were Wallace de Souza and Filipe Ferraz with 10 points each.

Their coach Marcelo Mendez stressed the unity of his team. "The team played very well,” he stated. “We played our game and we were efficient on our serve and in attack. However, I believe the difference for Sada Cruzeiro is the strength of the group. This is a group of warriors and they played as a team from the beginning to the end of the season. The crowd also had a major role in this achievement.”

Sada Cruzeiro, who were silver medallists in the 2012/2013 Brazil Superliga, also finished second to Italy’s Trentino in the 2012 FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship held in Doha, Qatar.

As hosts and current FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship title holders, Sada Cruzeiro automatically qualify for this year’s event. Joining them will be UPCN of Argentina, who qualified for the world event after finishing as runner-up of the South American Men’s Club Championship.

Also joining the eight team line up are the continental champions from Europe, Belogorie Belgorod of Russia who are also hoping for a national title win in the lead up to first FIVB volleyball event of the 2014 season in May.

Belogorie recently finished second in the Russian League behind Zenit Kazan and are through to the semifinals of the playoffs. The quarterfinals of the Russian Championship start on April 15 and include Lokomotiv Novosibirsk, the 2013 CEV champions and runners-up at last year’s Club World Championship. Zenit Kazan – who earned a bronze medal at the 2009 and 2011 editions of the FIVB Club World Championship and fourth place at the 2012 edition – will not take to the courts in Belo Horizonte having finished in fourth place at the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Men.

Africa’s Continental Champion, Esperance of Tunisia will also join the line-up in Belo Horizonte along with the Guaynabo Mets, the NORCECA representative at the world event.

This will be the fourth time that a team from Puerto Rico will take part in the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship. In February 2014 Puerto Rico’s Guaynabo Mets beat the Arecibo Captains to take the championship title in the Great Kia Final Series of the Puerto Rican Men’s Superior League 3-2 (18-25, 25-20, 26-24, 24-26, 15-12).

The Asian representative in the FIVB Club World Championship will be known shortly as the PLDT Home Fibr 2014 Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship – currently taking place in Manila, Philippines – draws closer to completion.

The participation of two teams – jointly decided by the FIVB and the organisers – will complete the line-up of clubs taking part in the Championship.

The FIVB Volleyball Men's Club World Championship will be followed by the women's tournament, which will take place from May 7 to 11 in Zurich, Switzerland.
