Manila, Philippines, April 12, 2014 – South Gas Club Sports, Matin Varamin, Al-Rayyan, and Baic Motor topped their respective pools with unscathed record in the preliminary round of the PLDT Home Fibr 2014 Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship at the Mall of Asia Arena and Cuneta Astrodome on Saturday.
Iraq’s South Gas Club Sports had a minor slip in the third set against Mongolia’s Altain Bars but still managed to overcome the Mongolian club to snatch the top spot in Pool A 3-1 (25-12, 25-17, 23-25, 25-15). PLDT HOME TVolution placed second with one win and one loss at three points with winless Mongolia coming last.
Matin Varamin of Iran prevented Lebanon’s Zahraa Al Minaa’s Bruno Furtado and Johnlenn Baretto from their explosive attacks that secured a 3-1 (25-16, 25-20, 25-27, 25-17) win helping then to top the leader board in Pool B. Matin Varamin’s crafty playmaker Mir Saeid Marouf L. led his team to a variety of brilliantly placed attacks that restrained the defense of the Lebanese side.
Shahram Mahmoudi Kh sizzled with 15 kills and an ace to finish with 17 points for the defending champions, who finished the preliminaries unscathed after three matches.
Zahraa Al Minaa yielded to its first loss in three outings despite the big plays of Bruno Furtado and Jhonlenn Baretto, who had 16 and 13 points, respectively.
With the win, Matin Varamin took the no. 1 spot with an unbeaten record, while Lebanon settled for no. 2 in their group going to the quarterfinals.
Kazakhstan’s Kondensat-Zhaikmunay managed to win over Oman’s Sohar in straight sets 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-18) but fell to second spot in Pool C behind powerhouse Al-Rayyan from Qatar.
Al-Rayyan played consistently even with reinforcement Cristian Savani having to sit out the entire match. The Qatari club outplayed Hong Kong’s Green Dragon in straight sets 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-22).
