Manila, Philippines, April 10, 2014 – Five teams remain unbeaten in the Preliminary Round of the PLDT Home Fibr 2014 Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship at the Mall of the Asia Arena and Cuneta Astrodome on Thursday.
The clubs from Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Qatar and China have kept a clean win-loss slate to safeguard their lead in their respective pools.
In Pool A, which comprises three teams, South Gas Club Sports of Iraq proved too strong for the PLDT Home TVolution as the Iraqi club’s tall lineup outplayed the home team in straight sets 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-18).
In Pool B, Lebanon’s Zahraa Al Minaa needed five grueling sets 3-2 (25-22, 28-30, 23-25, 25-23, 15-6) to finish off the spirited run by Japanese side, Oita Miyoshi Weisse Adler. The Lebanese club’s record in Pool B remains unscathed.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Matin Varamin showed its flair and outclassed Vietnam’s Duc Long Gia Lai in straight sets 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-15) to keep a 2-0 record.
Unbeaten Matin Varamin earned six points from two outings while Zahraa Al Minaa collected four points from two 3-2 wins over their rivals. Matin Varamin and Zahraa Al Minaa will meet on April 12 to vie for the top spot in the pool.
Qatari club Al-Rayyan stunned Kazakhstan’s Kondensat-Zhaikmunay 3-0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-18) to stay unbeaten in Pool C, which has five teams.
Cristian Savani tossed in 17 points, including 15 kills, as Al-Rayyan pinned Kondensat-Zhaikmunay with its first loss in three matches. Cala Gerardo Yosleyder also came through for Al-Rayyan with 10 attacks, three blocks and three service aces for a 16-point performance.Kondensat-Zhaikmunay built early leads in each set, but Al-Rayyan kept coming back with Savani, Yosleyder and Ibrahim Mohamed Saeed delivering the points in key stretches.
Al-Rayyan now has a record of two wins and no loss, earning six points while Kondensat-Zhaikmunay also clinched six points, with a record of two wins and one defeat.
In the other match of the pool, Turkmenistan’s Migrasiya stopped its losing streak at the expense of Oman’s Sohar 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-17).
China’s Baic Motor kept its composure to claim victory over the United Arab Emirates’ Alnasr Sports Club 3-0 (25-22, 28-26, 25-16). Even without reinforcements Wout Wijsmans and Frederic Winters in the second and third sets, the Chinese squad managed to break the Emiratis strong offense led by Amer Almarzooqi and Mohamed Chikhi.
Baic Moto lead the pool with six points, followed by Chinese Taipei and Alnasr Sports Club, both collecting three points from one win and one defeat.
