Team profile

UPCN of Argentina qualified for the 2014 edition of the FIVB Men’s Club World Championship after finishing as runner-up at the South American Men’s Club Championship.

The UPCN San Juan Volleyball Club was founded in 2007 in the province of San Juan and had a meteoric rise to success. In their first season, they avoided relegation in the last game of the season. After that, their progress was quick. In their second season in the Argentine League, they finished third (2008/09). They were runners-up in the following year (2009/10). UPCN have been unstoppable in the last four years, winning the championships in 2010/11, 2011/12, 2012/13 - conceding only one defeat - and, most recently, in 2013/14.

In 2013, UPCN went on to win the South American championship in Minas, Brazil, against the host team.
At the most recent World Championships in 2013, UPCN qualified for the semifinals, equaling the best ever performance by an Argentine team. Key players in this success story include Demián Gonzalez (setter), Sebastian Garroq (libero), Gustavo Molina (middle blocker) and Junior Souza (middle blocker), who have played a role in all UPCN's victorious campaigns.

In other national competitions, UPCN were champions of Super 8 and the Copa ACLAV, and placed third in the World Challenge in California.

Coach profile

Fabian Armoa was born in Buenos Aires but later moved to San Juan. He was a professional player but moved into coaching at an early age. Between 1996 and 2003, he enjoyed success as coach of Vélez Sarsfield, with outstanding performances in the Metropolitan Tournament.

In 2003, he became technical director of Argentina, a post he held for two years. He helped the national team win third place in the South American Championship, triumph in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament and finish fifth at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

He moved on to coach Azul and in 2008 became coach of UPCN, winning three consecutive titles in the country’s top national tournament, the Argentine League, and triumphing in the South American Championship following two runner-up finishes.

This will be
Fabian Armoa's second FIVB Volleyball Men's Club World Championship in charge of UPCN. In 2013, he guided the Argentine team to the semifinals of the competition.
