Team profile

Al-Rayyan’s only previous appearance in the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship was in 2012 when they finished fifth with one victory over Mexico’s Tigres UANL after participating as the host club. It was their silver medal performance at the Asian Men’s Club Championship, where they lost to reigning champions Matin Varamin of Iran 3-1 (19-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-16), which earned them this year’s coveted second wild card for the competition.

Al-Rayyan have been building themselves up, achieving a string of successes in recent years.

In 2011, they took first place at the GCC Champions Cup and second in the Qatar Federation Cup. They finished second in the Qatar Superliga 2010 and third in 2011 and both of those years they also won the Heir Apparent Cup. In 2010 they also lifted the Emir Cup, finishing second in that competition in 2011.

The club strengthened the team before the 2012 Club World Championships and will hope to improve on their performances during that event when they take to court at the Mineirinho Arena this May.
