Volleyball officially landed in China
in 1910 and the Chinese national team
has been participated in international
competitions for more than 45 years.
Since 1956, China has taken part in 10
World Championships, with its best
results being recorded in Italy (1978)
and Argentina (1982) where the Chinese
finished seventh.
The team also placed ninth three times,
in France (1956), the Soviet Union
(1962) and Czechoslovakia (1966). In
2002 in Argentina, China was 13th as a
new rebuilding phase got off the
ground.
China took part in the opening edition
of the top-class World League in 1990
and regularly participated between
1992-1997, finishing sixth in 1996.
The beginning of the 21st century has
seen China in the process of
rebuilding the national team when
newly appointed head coach Di Anhe
decided to put his own stamp on the
Chinese team, choosing from a new
generation of players. The young squad,
reaching an average age of just 23
years, returned to the World League in
2002 after a four-year absence and the
ninth place was not a disappointment
after they exhibited courage and
improved skills against their
opponents. China missed the 2003 World
League but are set to be a force at
the World Cup as they strive for
qualification at next year's Olympics
in Athens.
China, currently 17th on the FIVB
world rankings, will no doubt have one
eye on the 2008 Olympic Games in
Beijing, but this new Chinese lineup
have the potential to impress and go
all out for a berth in the 2004 Athens
Olympic Games by finishing on the
podium at the World Cup.
The 15-strong squad led by head coach
Di Anhe is designed with the perfect
mix of experience and young talent, as
most of the veterans have been
replaced with promising newcomers.
The Chinese team had a disappointing
year in 2002 while the young players
accumulated some international
experience but as recent as September
this year Di led China to second place
at the 2003 Asian Championship and a
berth in the World Cup.

El voleibol llegó oficialmente a China
en 1910 y el equipo nacional chino ha
estado participando en competencias
internacionales por más de 45 años.
Desde 1956 China ha tomado parte de
diez Campeonatos Mundiales, con sus
mejores resultados en Italia (1978) y
Argentina (1982), donde los chinos
terminaron en séptimo lugar.El equipo
también ocupó la novena posición en
tres ocasiones en Francia (1956),
Unión Soviética (1962) y
Checoslovaquia (1966). El año pasado
en Argentina, China se adjudicó el
puesto 13. Igualmente los chinos
participaron en la primera edición de
la prestigiosa Liga Mundial en 1990 y
lo ha hecho regularmente entre
1992-1997, terminando sextos en 1996.
El inicio del Siglo 21 ha visto a
China en el proceso de reconstruir a
su selección nacional con el nuevo
técnico Di Anhe decidió poner su
propio sello en la escuadra oriental,
eligiendo jugadores de una nueva
generación de deportistas. El joven
equipo, que alcanza una edad promedio
de 23 años, retornó a la Liga Mundial
en el 2002 tras cuatro años de
ausencia, y el noveno lugar obtenido
no fue decepcionante luego de que
mostraran mucha valentía y nuevas
aptitudes frente a sus oponentes. Este
año, los partidos de la Liga Mundial
darán a China otra oportunidad de
probar que han progresado con miras a
la clasificación olímpica para los
Juegos del año entrante en Atenas.
China está actualmente en el puesto 15
del ranking mundial de la FIVB, y
enfrentará a Yugoslavia, Holanda y
Cuba en la Serie C de la edición 2003
de la Liga Mundial.
