"I am working hard to finally get that Olympic gold" says Russian star Ekaterina Gamova

The players of the Russian national team celebrate their 3-2 win over Italy which meant also the top position in the final standings of preliminary Pool A

London, Great Britain, August 5, 2012 – “This win is really important and the next match will be really important to prove whether we will struggle for a medal or go home” said Russian star Ekaterina Gamova after anchoring her side to a 3-2 win over Italy to finally top the charts in Pool A. “I have dreamt all my life of winning gold at the Olympics. In my medal collection I have World and European Championships but not yet an Olympic gold. I am working really hard to get a medal”.

“I think that I had some faults and didn’t play very well. I couldn’t do much better. We missed a lot of points in defence” stressed Italy’s opposite player Carolina Costagrande. “They are very good in the attack and blocking. We didn’t react very well to the counter-attack. In the fourth set, it was the weakest part of the match”.

“It was a good match, we played at the same level as one of the best teams in the world, and we even managed to catch up on them at some point. We could and should do more, but I think this match left us with a good feeling” commented coach Massimo Barbolini. “We finish a good preliminary round here, now a second Olympics start. We are going to play one of the Asian teams (Korea or China in the quarterfinals), their level is very high, but I think they should worry about us too. If we came through the quarterfinals we would be the first Italian national team to go that far at the Olympics. We must do more in defence. We must work on our second line” he concluded.
