The year 2009 was extraordinary in
terms of the quality and number of
tournaments played and the develop-
ment undertaken in the world of Vol-
leyball and Beach Volleyball.
A total of 967 matches (449 women,
518 men) throughout the year were
highlighted by 2010 World Champion-
ships qualification matches, the Beach
Volleyball World Championships in
Stavanger, Norway, the World League, World Grand
Prix, SWATCH FIVB World Tour and of course, the re-
turn of the Men’s Club World Championship and the
season ending World Grand Champions Cup.
However, the increase in Volleyball development
throughout the year was also equally important.
President Jizhong Wei made it clear to all members
that development was a key area of growth for the
FIVB and this was evident with the FIVB investing
more in development during 2009 than any other
year in its history by allocating more financial re-
sources to the FIVB Con-
federations to help na-
tional federations.
With this new emphasis
on supporting the Confed-
erations, who in turn sup-
port the Federations, the
FIVB’s goal is to strength-
en and grow the sport of
Volleyball and Beach Vol-
leyball across all levels,
with particularly impor-
tance on the athletes – a
key aspect for any sport.
Still developing in more
ways than one
