Final Standing

November 3-8
triumphed: Maxicono Parma won in 1989, Massagge-
ro Ravenna in 1991 and Mediolanum Milano in 1990
and 1992. And in the latest final Trentino swept Bel-
chatow aside in just 78 minutes. Middle blocker Ema-
nuele Birarelli and Andrea Sala with the aid of the
side blockers made the difference. Their tight block
paved the way for wings Leandro Vissotto and Matey
Kaziyski to fly high and score from various net posi-
tions and use the Golden Formula to their advantage.
With his 21 points in the match Vissotto, with the help
of Kaziyski who scored 16, was the major attacking
weapon for Trentino. Bartosz Kurek topped the scoring
for Belchatow with 23 points but did not get the right
support from his team-mates, particularly France’s
Stephane Antiga and setter Miguel Falasca from Spain,
who were not on top form. Trentino received their gold
medals in the presence of the FIVB 2nd Executive Vice-
President Theofanis Tsiokris and FIVB Vice-President
Dr. Amr M. Elwani as well as FIVB Board members
Shanrit Wongprasert and Abdelhadi Ghzali.
Zenit, who qualified as the leading team in the CEV
rankings, clinched a straight-sets victory over Pay-
kan of Iran 25-13, 25-18, 25-16 in the bronze medal
match. Wing spiker Maxim Pantelemonenko and
opposite Alexey Cheremisin were the stars for Ze-
nit, along with blockers Alexander Abrosimov and
Nikolai Apalikov who did not allow the Iranian team
any chance to penetrate throughout the three sets.
Pantelemonenko top-scored for Zenit with 17 points
while Cheremisin contributed 12. Mohammad Kazem
was Paykan’s best scorer with 11 points.
Trentino had reached the final with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-
22, 25-19) win over Paykan in the semifinals while
Belchatow had beaten Zenit 3-1 (15-25, 25-23, 25-
21, 26-24). The full lineup for the six-day competition
saw Pool A comprising Trentino Betclic, Zenit Kazan,
NORCECA representatives Plataneros de Corozal
of Puerto Rico and African champions Zamalek of
Egypt while Pool B featured Belchatow as the second-
ranked European team, Asian Club Championship
winners Paykan, South American champions Cimed
of Brazil and the host club Al Arabi Doha.
