Final Standing
Osaka - Nagoya, Japan
November 18 - 23
Cuba 3-2 (25-22, 24-26, 25-18, 23-25, 15-10) while
Japan pulled off a fantastic 3-2 (22-25, 25-15, 21-25,
25-21, 15-10) victory over Poland.
Three more spectacular games of four sets apiece fol-
lowed on day two after which Brazil and Japan were
the only two teams to remain unbeaten. Brazil beat
Iran 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 23-25, 25-19), Cuba came
from behind to beat Poland 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-18,
25-22) and Japan were too strong for Egypt, also win-
ning in four sets (25-15, 22-25, 25-21, 25-17).
On day three Japan put themselves within a whisper
of a podium finish after claiming their third victory
from as many matches. They beat Iran in an outstand-
ing match 3-2 (27-25, 18-25, 25-23, 20-25, 16-14)
while Brazil also remained unbeaten after beating
Poland 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-18) and Cuba overcame
Egypt in a five-set thriller 3-2 (25-17, 23-25, 25-14,
23-25, 15-7).
Brazil, Cuba and Japan were then confirmed as med-
allists after all three finished the penultimate day in
an unbeatable position. Brazil led the rankings with
four victories following a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-22)
win over Egypt while Cuba beat Japan 3-0 (25-19,
25-20, 25-22) and Poland earned their first win of
the tournament, beating Iran (25-23, 18-25, 28-26,
25-23).
Cuba beat Iran 3-1 (25-14, 25-22, 15-25, 25-15) in
the first match of the final day of competition but the
NORCECA champions had to work hard. European
champions Poland saved their best for last and beat
Egypt 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-19) in the second match
of the final day to end in fourth place with a 2-3 re-
cord. Egypt finished winless at 0-5.
And in the final match Brazil showed Japan who was
in charge with a comprehensive straight-sets victory.
“In the tournament as a whole we had our ups and
downs but when we needed to be stable in the big
matches we played better,” Brazil coach Bernardinho
said. “That is the most important thing. Right now we
are going to party but then I must start thinking how
to build a stronger team for next year’s World League
and World Championship.”
