Brazil underlined their global domination of women’s
Volleyball by winning their eighth FIVB World Grand
Prix title at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium in Au-
gust with a clean sweep of five victories in the final
round, having arrived as the only unbeaten team from
the preliminary round.
Following wins over Germany, Russia, the Nether-
lands and China, the world No. 1 team and defending
champions beat hosts Japan 3-1 (25-21, 25-27, 25-19,
25-19) in a thrilling final game in front of a 10,000
capacity crowd, as well as millions watching the live
television broadcast. Welissa Sassa Gonzaga scored a
match-high 19 points for Brazil, while Maiko Kano led
Japan with 14, including 11 kills from 27 attempts.
“It’s great to win the World Grand Prix again,” 55-year-
old head coach Jose Roberto Lagas Guimaraes, who
