12,200-seat Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground
The Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground was
a stunning permanent venue for the men’s and
women’s Olympic Games Beach Volleyball tourna-
The venue, one of nine temporary sites built for the
Beijing Olympics, featured nine courts, with one
main competition area, two warm-up courts and six
training grounds. Center court had a seating capa-

The Beach Volleyball site was built in Beijing’s lar-
gest park, located on the site of a former prince’s
palace in the Chaoyang District. Construction on
the park itself began in 1984.
The 180,000 square-meter Volleyball ground contai-
ned 17,000 tons of fine sand imported from Hainan
and was located 21 kilometers (about 30 minutes)
from the Olympic Village.
The Beach Volleyball event was extremely well atten-
ded, and the tournament was deemed a great suc-
cess by players and organizers alike.
A full house watched Phil Dalhausser and Todd Ro-
gers of the United States win the men’s tournament
by defeating Brazil’s Marcio Araujo and Fabio Luiz in
the final, while compatriots Misty May-Treanor and
Kerri Walsh won the women’s competition by bea-
ting local pair Jia Tian and Jie Wang.
