Beijing Institute of Technology Gymnasium during Russia vs Germany
The Olympic Volleyball events were staged at two
venues: The Capital Indoor Stadium and the Beijing
Institute of Technology Gymnasium.
The 18,000-seat Capital Indoor Stadium was one of
11 venues renovated for the Beijing Games. It was
built in 1968 and has hosted Volleyball, table tennis,
badminton, basketball and gymnastics competitions,
as well as skating and ice hockey.
In 2001, it was renovated for the World University
Games, with the latest expansion increasing its size
to 54,707 square meters. The competition court,
training courts and functional rooms were all given a
facelift, with the ticket counter and registration cen-
ter built from scratch. The venue is friendly to people
with disabilities thanks to its newly built handicap-
accessible facilities, including two elevators on its
western side, an easy-to-use entrance and enlarged
The 5,000-seat Beijing Institute of Technology
Gymnasium is known for its unique “batfish” design
and also for being environment-friendly. Its three
layers of insulation materials contribute to energy
savings, while multiple windows and skylights make
the most of natural light, practically eliminating the
need for artificial lighting during the day.
