The double-gender 2008 SWATCH FIVB Youth World
Championships ended with European teams standing
atop of the podium after both finals.
Estonia’s Kirsto Kollo and Oliver Venno won gold in the
boys’ event, while Germany’s Chantal Laboureur and
Levke Springer took top honors in the girls’ competi-
tion held at Hommerson Beachsport Stadion in the sea-
side resort of Scheveningen, The Hague.
Kollo and Venno defeated Jeff Carlson and Tony Ciarelli
of the United States in the final, 21-17, 21-16 in windy
and rainy conditions. Experience was the key for the
victors, who had been playing three years together
prior to the competition, compared to only a month for
the Americans.
“We were very nervous at the beginning, but we played
well enough to keep gaining confidence,” said Kollo. “It
was a good day for us and we didn’t make too many
mistakes, which really helped.”
In the bronze medal match, Poland’s Marek Leznicki
and Damian Wojtasik defeated Spain’s Victor Bouza
and Jesus Castizo 21-17, 21-12.
Laboureur and Springer downed local favorites Rimke
Braakman and Sophie van Gestel 10-21, 21-16, 15-11 in
the girls’ final, with Russia’s Irina Chaika and Ekaterina
Karapischenko taking home the bronze.
