2008 Beach Volleyball -
Marseille
112
The top three seeded women’s teams all earned
spots on the podium of the US$350,000 World Se-
ries13. Highlighting the final day of action was Ste-
phanie Pohl and Okka Rau, who won Germany’s first
women’s gold medal in the history of the SWATCH
FIVB World Tour, beating Maria Antonelli and Vanil-
da Leao. Brazil claimed two medals, winning multi-
ple medals in Marseille for the sixth time.
For the 12th time, the fans in Marseille heard the
Brazilian national anthem following the men’s me-
dal ceremony, as Marcio Araujo and Fabio Luiz won
the title. The Brazilians defeated top-seeded Chine-
se team Penggen Wu and Linyin Xu 21-16, 21-16.
Brazil made it a total of 20 medals in 14 SWATCH
FIVB World Tour events held in the port city in Sou-
thern France. For Marcio Araujo and Fabio, this
marked their 11th title - putting them solely in fifth
place all-time on the team charts - and second gold
medal of 2008.
A great day for Pohl and Rau
