The Beijing Olympic Games, six SWATCH FIVB World
Tour Grand Slam events and US $ 8million in prize
money were highlights of the 2008 international Be-
ach Volleyball season, with Brazilians finishing as the
world’s top-ranked men’s and women’s teams.
The 2008 season featured 53 combined tournaments
for men and women, including the Olympics, 39
SWATCH FIVB World Tour events and 12 FIVB Chal-
lenger/Satellite events starting at the end of March in
Australia and concluding in mid-November. In addition,
the SWATCH FIVB Youth and Junior World Champion-
ships for men and women were held in the Netherlan-
ds and Great Britain, respectively.
The events attracted 1,287 players, including 730 men
and 557 women, from 67 countries.
The Brazilian pairs of Harley Marques/Pedro Salga-
do and Shelda Bede/Ana Paula Connelly finished as
the top men’s and women’s teams respectively on the
SWATCH FIVB World Tour.
The American tandems of Phil Dalhausser/Todd Rogers
andMistyMay-Treanor/KerriWalsh captured themen’s
and women’s gold medals at the Beijing 2008 Olympic
Games. May-Treanor and Walsh’s effort matched their
Athens 2004 Olympic gold-medal performance, while
Dalhausser and Rogers became the third Summer
Games men’s winners from the United States.
Harley (BRA) was named the men’s SWATCH FIVB
World Tour’s most outstanding player after winning
a record-tying seven gold medals in 2008, including
six with Salgado and one with Benjamin Insfran. Chi-
na’s Xi Zhang tied May-Treanor as the women’s most
outstanding player. While May-Treanor and Walsh won
three SWATCH FIVB Grand Slam stops along with their
Olympic gold, Zhang teamed with Chen Xue to win two
gold medals in Korea and Russia. Zhang and Xue also
captured the Olympic bronze medal.
