Bas van de Goor was appointed
Tournament Director for the 2013 FIVB
World Tour Transavia Grand Slam in The
Hague. The event, taking place from June
11
to 16, is the first World Tour Grand Slam
to be held in The Netherlands. “It is a great
honour to be part of a top tournament like
this. I hope my experience and knowledge
will help lift this event to an even higher
level,” said van de Goor. The position will
be a new challenge for the former Dutch
Olympic volleyball champion who has never
made the cross over into beach volleyball.

The FIVB Development Centre in Buenos
Aires held a 'Beach Get Involved' seminar,
led by Mr Mauro Hernandez from Venezuela.
The course brought together experienced
technicians to help improve participants’
knowledge of different beach volleyball
techniques. Olympic players, Mariano
Baracetti and Esteban Martinez were
also on hand to provide personal insights
and experience during the discussions.
Participants discussed the biological demands
of playing beach volleyball, new trends in
training, as well as planning and control
systems, in addition to other important
issues of relevance to the sport.

Mexican duo Virgen/Ontiveros won gold at
the second leg of the
2013
NORCECA Beach

in Boca Chica, Dominican
Republic against USA’s Keenan/Mayer while
Canadians Redman/ Zbyszewski took bronze.
In an all-American final, Jennifer Fopma and
Brooke Sweat won gold in the women’s
competition against Brittany Hochevar and
Summer Ross. Bibi Candelas and Martha
Revuelta of Mexico won bronze.
Brazil’s Rebecca/Liliane won the fifth stop of
the
SouthAmericanBeachVolleyball circuit
in Asuncion, Paraguay against compatriots
Secomandi/Berti while Argentine’s Gallay/
Zonta took bronze. Chile’s Grimalt cousins
took gold in the men’s competition against
Igor Hernandez/Jesus Villafañe (Venezuela),
while Filipe/Oscar (Brazil) took bronze.

The Guinean Volleyball Federation
(
FGVB) organised a Level I coaches course
led by Mr Mbaye Deme, FIVB instructor
and the Director of the Development
Centre in Senegal. The opening ceremony
of the course took place on April 1 in the
presence of Guinea’s Minister of Sport, the
General Secretary of the UNOSG, Members
of the FGVB and the Academic Director
of Guinean Sport. The Coaches course
offered through the Volleyball Cooperation
Programme (VCP) was aimed at increasing
coaches’ skills and knowledge on how to
play volleyball and form teams.
Five young players have participated
in Bangladesh’s 2013 Metropolitan
Volleyball First Division League, marking
their transition from junior to senior level
competition. The players represented the
following local clubs - City Club viz, East
End Club, Uttara Sporting Club, East End
Boys and Azad Sporting Club. The second
division of the 2013 Metropolitan League
will be held in the first week of May.
A number of players from the recently
concluded Upazilla School Tournament –
a development project supported by the
FIVB Development Fund – are expected to
participate.
