Sri Lanka book launch
Volleyball then and now”
The Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation recently
launched a book entitled “Volleyball Then
and Now”, authored by Susil Ranasinghe,
General Secretary of the federation. The
launch took place at the Galle Face Hotel
in Colombo with many distinguished guests
and past national players in attendance.
Though the book is written primarily for
a Sinhalese speaking audience, the chapter
discussing international volleyball is in
English. The picture captions in the book
have also been translated into English where
possible. The book will be distributed to
schools and libraries free of charge.
Kenyan beach volleyball teams swept the
boards with gold medals at an invitational
tournament held in Bujumbura, Burundi.

to take the top spot. In the
men’s final, Bernard Musumba/Alex Kariuki of
the Kenya ‘B’ team beat Rwanda ‘A’ in two
straight sets (21-17, 21-6) to take home gold
for their country.

commission member Ben Juma reaffirmed his
support. “We intend to maintain these teams
in beach activities since they have shown great
potential in the sport,” he said.

League heats up
Brazilian duo Elize-Fernanda took home
the women’s gold medal and Venezuela’s
Henriquez-Colina the men’s in the third
stop of the South American Beach Volleyball
circuit in Pocitos, Uruguay. Sixteen men’s
teams and 15 women’s participated in this
stop, which included six Uruguayan teams in
each gender.
The men’s final between Henriquez-Colina
from Venezuela and Chile’s Grimalt cousins
ended with a 2-0 win (22-20, 21-14) for
the Venezuelans. On the women’s side,
Elize-Fernanda secured victory over their
Argentine counterparts with a straight sets
win (21-18, 29-27).
Bethania De la Cruz, top scorer and
best server of the 2011 FIVB World Cup
was named captain of the Dominican
Republic women’s national team. Coach
Marcos Kwiek announced the news at the
end of the team’s practice session at the
Santo Domingo volleyball complex. De la
Cruz, who turns 26 in May, replaces FIVB
Hero Milagros Cabral, who retired after
the 2012 Olympic Games and now works
as sport director of the National District
of Santo Domingo for the Recreation and
Sport Ministry of the Dominican Republic.
The final four teams of the 2013 CEV
Volleyball Champions League, to be held in
March, were decided after four months of
world class volleyball.
The women’s competition will be held in
Istanbul, Turkey on March 9 and 10 with the
following four teams fighting for the top
spots: Galatasaray Daikin (Turkey); Vakifbank
Turkey); Rabita Baku (Azerbaijan); Unendo
Yamamay Busto Arsizio (Italy).
The men’s final will take place a week
later in Omsk, Russia with the following
four teams: Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo
Italy); Zaksa Kedzierzyn-Kozle (Poland);
Zenit Kazan (Russia); Lokomotiv Novosibirsk
