AVC volleyball competition
calendar decided
The AVC Sports Event Council decided on
the volleyball competition calendar for 2013
at a meeting in Beijing, China. The women’s
senior volleyball championship will be held
in Nakhonpathom and Ratchaburi, Thailand
from September 13 to 21 while the men’s
will be held in Dubai, UAE from September
28
to October 6.
The Sports Events Council also proposed
that teams from Australia, Iran, Japan and
China take part in the 2013 U-23 World
Championship and recommended the
establishment of the AVC Continental
ranking starting from 2013, following a
recommendation from the FIVB.
Forty-two African countries have
registered to enter the qualification
process for the 2014 FIVB Volleyball World
Championships - a record number for the
continent. This is a significant increase in the
level of participation from the 2010 edition
when only 15 countries, comprising 13
men’s and 13 women’s teams, took part in
the qualifications.
The 2014 FIVB World Championship
qualifications will feature 42 men’s and
40
women’s teams. As the African Sports
Organizing Committee (SOC) proposed in
their meeting last year, the African teams will
be divided into sub zonal groups.

Brazil and Argentina have taken gold
in the men’s and women’s competition in
the second stage of the South American
circuit.
Brazil’s Evandro and Vitor Felipe
overcame Argentina’s Ian Mehamed and
Julian Azaad in a two set victory (21-11,
21-16)
in the men’s competition.
Argentina’s Ana Gallay and Virginia
Zonta took home gold in the women’s
event with a 2-0 win (23-21, 21-14) over
Brazil’s Fernanda Berti and Elize Maia. Ana
Gallay also won gold in 2009 with then
partner Mariela Duce, in Miraflores, Peru.
Cristóbal Marte Hoffiz, president
of NORCECA, has applauded the
confederation's organisation of the sixteen
first-round tournaments, which count
towards the 2014 FIVBWorld Championships
in Poland and Italy. More than US$700,000
was invested in the eight women’s and
men’s events that took place in 15 different
countries across the four sub zones within
the NORCECA region.
The top three ranked teams advanced to
the 2013 second-round tournaments from
each of the four zonal tournaments, which
included six events per gender (twelve in all).
The CEV and the VELUX Group have
entered a title sponsorship agreement
for the 2013 CEV Volleyball European
Championship for men that will be held in
Denmark and Poland. “We are extremely
pleased with the partnership we have
entered with the VELUX Group especially
since this company has a long experience
in sponsoring major sports events that have
regularly turned into a terrific success” said
CEV President André Meyer.
The VELUX Group sponsorship will run
until the CEV Men’s Volleyball European
Championship will come to an end on
September 29, 2013.
