Julio Velasco to continue as head
coach for Iran's men's team
The Volleyball Federation of Iran confirmed
that Julio Velasco will continue to coach
Iran’s national men’s volleyball team for 2013
and 2014.
With Velasco, the Iran men’s team won the
Asian Volleyball Championship in 2011,
earned a ticket to the 2013 World League
qualification tournament and achieved 14
place in the last FIVB world ranking. Velasco,
whose coaching career spans more three
decades, has also coached for Italy, Spain
and the Czech Republic.
Egypt claimed the title at the 12
Youth African Nations Championship taking
the final match 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-22)
over Rwanda at Sétif Hall in Algeria.
This is Egypt’s third title in this age category,
after 2002 and 2004. Defending champions
Tunisia finished second, ahead of third-placed
Rwanda and the fourth-placed Algeria.
The four teams have secured their tickets to
the FIVB U19 World Championship in Mexico
this summer.

Egypt claim African
championship title
Youth and Junior European
Olympic beach volleyball champion Emanuel
was chosen to represent Brazil on the
Athletes’ Commission of the World Anti-
Doping Agency in New York. Emanuel was
invited to join the select group of athletes
Committee at the end of last year. The first
meeting of the group took place at the end
of January. The commission has 14 athletes
and three observers, who meet periodically
to discuss issues relating to doping control
officers with the Agency.
Following two years of leading the women’s
national team, David Aleman was appointed
coach of Puerto Rico’s men’s team. Aleman
replaces Argentine Carlos Cardona while
Rafael Olazaguesti, assistant to Aleman on
the women’s team, takes over the job as
full time coach. Aleman recently guided
the Arecibo Captains to the title in its first
year in the Puerto Rico Men’s League while
Olazaguesti coached Lancheras de Cataño
to the crown in last year’s edition of the
women’s league.
The lots for the final round of the 2013 CEV
boys' and girls' Youth Volleyball European
Championships were decided at a ceremony,
in Belgrade, Serbia (see photo). The top six
teams for each gender will qualify for the
FIVB Youth World Championship.
A series of qualification tournaments will also
be held to fill the spots assigned to Europe
for the 2013 FIVB Junior Volleyball World
Championship coming up this summer. A
total of four vacancies per gender will be at
stake from May 7 to 12.
