legend Arakida Yuko, who was part of the
team that won gold at the 1976 Montreal
Olympics and managed the Japan women’s
volleyball team from 2005-2007 and 2009-

The updated volleyball world rankings for
January 2013 have been published.
These rankings see no change among the
top 12 teams in either the men’s or women’s
divisions. The Junior and Youth world
rankings will be made available once the
current round of continental qualification
events have finished.

Key development initiatives were high on
the agenda in a meeting between Dr. Graça
and Italian Volleyball Federation president
and FIVB executive co-opted member, Mr
Carlo Magri. As one of President Graça’s first
strategic development moves, the Italian
Volleyball Federation committed to providing
assistance to the Algeria Volleyball Federation
as well as the Tunisia and Morocco Volleyball
Federations in a subsequent phase. The
progress of preparations for the FIVB
Volleyball Women’s World Championship
to be held in Italy, was also discussed
at the meeting.
The FIVB Technical and Development
department announced the completion, by
the FIVB’s Technical Evaluations Team, of
the technical evaluations from the Women’s
London Olympic Games. These tools, which
are freely available for use
on the
Technical/Coach page of FIVB.org, highlight
the latest trends and techniques of the
world’s best players and teams.

During the meeting the delegation
presented their proposals for volleyball and
beach volleyball venues should their city win
their bid for the 2020 Games.
Tokyo's bid promotes the city’s ideal
environment for athletes, its world-renown
safety, cleanliness and abundance of greenery
as well as exceptional accommodation,
infrastructure and transport.
