This time a year ago…
Australia and Vanuatu take gold
in Tahiti
Sam Boehm and Russel Moore from
Australia beat New Zealand’s Darryl Lewis
and James Gilling to grab the men’s gold
medal at the 2012 Oceania Beach Volleyball
Championships in Papeete, Tahiti at the end
of November. Vanuatu’s Henriette Iatika
and Joyce Joshua clinched the title at the
women’s tournament beating their rivals
from Australia in straight sets.
London 2012 Olympians Ana Gallay and
Virginia Zonta of Argentina made a superb
start to 2013 by taking out the Puerto Gaitan
beach volleyball international tournament in
Colombia in early January. While Gally/Zonta
claimed the women’s title, Uruguay’s Renzo
Cairus and Nicolas Zanotta won the men’s
tournament by beating Argentina’s Santiago
Etchegaray and Pablo Bianchi.
Costa Rica won its 14
th
crown in the history
of the Women's Central American Volleyball
Cup by defeating Honduras 3-0 (25-15,
25-14, 25-16)
in El Salvador in December.
Nicaragua, took second place with a better
point-ratio than Guatemala. Both teams
totalled 17 points but Nicaragua's balance
of points scored for and against (1,226 to
1,056)
gave them second place.
Beach Volleyball Olympic champions Julius
Brink and Jonas Reckermann were voted
Germany’s second best Team of the Year
for 2012, with the top prize going to the
Olympic men’s rowing team (coxed eight),
which claimed gold at the Games in London.
Cape Verde’s Pais Valter and Martins
Davidson claimed the men’s gold, and
Senegal’s Aïta Gaye and Fatoumata Dacosta
were women’s champions in the zone 2

KOZUCH, GROZER AND
CASTRO WIN AWARDS
In December, FIVB Heroes Margareta
Kozuch and Georg Grozer were
chosen Germany's Players of the
Year, a third consecutive win for the
pair. Sheilla Castro was also named
Brazil’s best female athlete of 2012
at an award ceremony hosted by the
Brazilian Olympic Committee.
