Enjoying the moment in London
Villafañe is continuing a strong family tradition
‘We have always worked with our
minds focused on the Olympic
Games… it was the dream of the
entire national team’
“We have always worked with our minds focused on the Olympic
Games,” Villafañe said. “It was the dream of the entire national team,
and even though only Igor and I went there, it was the achievement of
a whole team to set that target.”
In London they were drawn in a tough pool, alongside the Dutch pair
Nummerdor and Schuil and the Latvians Plavins and Smedins, who
eventually met each other for the bronze medal. But Hernandez and
Villafañe took a set off the Dutch, as they did against the German
No.8 seeds Erdmann and Matysik, and on top of their groundbreaking
qualification they left a mark for future Venezuelan teams to emulate.
