It was with great pleasure that I welcomed delegates
from across the world to the FIVB headquarters in
Lausanne for the first Board of Administration meeting
since I was elected President.
This was an opportunity to meet up again with people
who I know hold volleyball in their hearts and want to
do all they can to maximise the impact that this great
sport can make in an ever-congested marketplace.
A number of important decisions were made that
will alter our sport from this year on and bring great
benefits to those that play, officiate, organise and
watch it and you can read about them in this edition.
One thing that I want to commend our delegates
on is the decision to embrace technology where it
is accessible and where it will be of benefit. In the
modern era there is no excuse for ignoring the role
technology can play in shaping our sport and while we
may not always use it, we must at least examine how
it can play a beneficial role in making volleyball and
beach volleyball even better.
We have seen how it has proven beneficial to other
sports and the key thing is that the players are happy
with it. It would be unacceptable if they feel their
efforts and endeavours are being marginalised for no
other reason than people being resistant to change and
for that reason alone we owe it to them to introduce
it where we can.
In fact one of the things that delighted me the most
was the desire not to rest on our laurels and find new
and innovative ways in which we can strengthen
our sport. We are charged with its welfare and
development and we must do all we can to make sure
it is in the healthiest situation that it can be.
The first Board meeting showed that the FIVB and
its stakeholders are prepared to tackle the important
issues and put in place changes and reforms where
necessary. It is a process that must never stop.
