It may still be three years off and with two FIVB Beach Volleyball World
Championships before it, but Estonian pair Rivo Vesik and Kristo
Kollo are already starting to work their way towards an appearance
at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games.
The duo played together for the first time at last year’s Moscow Grand
Slam and they also took part in Grand Slams in Gstaad, Klagenfurt
and Stare Jablonki.
The 32-year-old Vesik made his FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour
debut in 2002 at the Mallorca Open and his best result in that time
was a first place finish at the 2007 Zagreb Open with Kristjan Kais.
For Kollo, 23, the tournaments were his first on the Tour, but he
certainly has pedigree having won the 2008 FIVB Under-19 World
Championships alongside Oliver Venno.
Kristo is young and he has a lot of energy, sometimes a bit too much
and he wants to take all the balls himself,” Vesik said. “Nonetheless
Kristo is in a better position than I was at that point of his career, as
he has been playing international games from such a young age.”
The pair are hoping that they can take advantage of the new World
Tour calendar, which provides more opportunities for international
competition through an increase in the number of Grand Slams and
Open tournaments, to build up their momentum ahead of a tilt at
Rio starting with the Fuzhou Open where they lost to Swedish 14th
seeds Stefan Gunnarsson and Hannes Brinkborg in the first round of
The new FIVB calendar is good in the sense that there are more
tournaments and that is better for the players, as it is clearer how you
can compete in these tournaments,” Vesik added. “We want to play
as many tournaments as possible and if at the end of this year we
are in the top 32 of the world rankings we will be satisfied with the
season. The year after that we will aim higher and then even higher
the year after.”
Estonia’s leading pair have their sights set on appearing at the Rio de
Janeiro Olympic Games.
The pair featured in four FIVB World Tour events together in 2012.
