Global overview reveals
rich potential
The first weeks of my presidency have given me
a great insight into the worldwide potential of
our sport. I have always believed volleyball can
be a truly global sport and since my inauguration
in Anaheim, my visits to each FIVB Continental
Confederation have presented a wonderful spirit of
cooperation and anticipation of what lies ahead.
Of course, while in the US, I had the opportunity to meet
many of the NORCECA members who have impressed
with how they have immersed themselves into beach
volleyball and volleyball with such great passion.
One of my first trips as President of the FIVB was to the
Club World Championships in Doha, where we were
treated to another superbly organised tournament thanks
to Mr Khalid Ali Al-Mawlawi and his team at the Qatar
Volleyball Federation.
I returned in December for the Doha GOALS conference,
where world leaders including former French President
Nicolas Sarkozy shared ideas on social improvement through
sport. I am proud that volleyball has a big role to play when it
comes to creating initiatives for global progress through sport.
In the same month I was very happy to host my first FIVB
Executive Committee Meeting as President in my home
town of Rio de Janeiro. It was a crucial meeting to formulate
many of the key strategic ideas to implement change in our
organisation. We will be seeing the fruits of these in the
coming months, when we can expect great change and
modernisation of our sport and organisation.
And finally I was extremely pleased to visit
Algeria and Italy in quick succession. A new FIVB
development programme targeting North Africa aims
to use the considerable talent available to the Italian
federation to train coaches in Algeria and around the
Mediterranean, and similar programmes are being
established in other parts of the world, like Serbia and
Poland where transfer of knowledge is so important
for the well-being of our sport.
With this great sense of teamwork and unity,
I am definitely looking forward to 2013 with
great optimism.
