Italy Faces China in Championship final
Pila,
Poland, August 16, 2003 – Italy meets title defenders China on
Sunday in the gold medal match of 2003 FIVB Girls’ Under 18
World Championship. It will be Italy’s first ever appearance in
the final of this youth championship after they had a decisive
win against the USA in Saturday’s semifinal.
Italy charged through their match in just one hour leaving few
openings for the American side. The European vice-champions
overwhelmed their opponents 25-11 in the opener. The USA came
close to drawing equal in the second set at 17-18 but then went
on to win only one of the subsequent exchanges. Although the USA
team showed courage and determination in the third set, they
committed a number of unforced errors that opened the way for
Italy's straight set triumph. more

Day Five - Serbia & Montenegro Eliminated
Pila,
Poland, August 14, 2003 - After a day off, the 2003 FIVB 8th
Girls' Under 18 World Championship resumed on Wednesday with as
many as six Play-off Round matches: in two only a seeding was at
stake, but the other four saw battles for survival. Among those
who did not stay alive is Serbia and Montenegro. The bronze
medallists of 2003 European Championships suffered a 3-2 defeat
against the tournament's dark horse Thailand. The Asians
overcame the Balkan team in five thrilling sets, in which the
emotions were at their peak. "We are extremely happy because
this is one of the best achievements in the history of
Thailand's youth volleyball. We beat a very strong team, much
taller than ours" said Chitipol Toomanee, the head coach of
Thailand.

Favourites dominate on opening day
Pila
& Wloclawek, Poland, August 09, 2003 - The first match-day of
the Preliminary Round in the 2003 FIVB 8th Girls' Under 18 World
Championship, played in two Polish cities: Pila and Wloclawek,
supplied all the drama and tension but no surprises following
eight exciting games. For hosts Poland however, they were
closest to being one of the first victims of the an upset when
they took on Thailand. The
home team, based on the students of the Polish Volleyball
Federation's school, started the tournament very nervously but
had luck on its side twice in the most important moments of the
match. In the opening set the Asians were leading 23-20 but
conceded five straight points to gift the set to the Poles.

COLORADO
SPRINGS - The USA Girl's Youth National Volleyball Team

officials said. The Americans earned an automatic bid to the 2003 Girl's

medal at the NORCECA Youth Girl's Volleyball
Championship in Salt Lake City, Utah, last summer but
initially, USA Volleyball withdrew Team USA from the
world championships because the tournament was scheduled
to take place in Kenya, a country where stringent travel
restrictions are in place for U.S. citizens.
