Russia beat Iran 3-0 (25-23 25-23 25-16)
The battle gained tempo from the beginning of the first set, with leads changing hands for several times. As the score was tied at 19-19, Roman Danilovs thundering spikes scored three straight points for Russia to put the team in front 22-19. At the end of the set, both sides fielded several substitutions to improve their game and to snatch the first-set win. Russia stretched the lead to 23-21, but the Iranians regrouped and came close at 23-24, thanks to Mehdi Ranjbars fierce spikes. Still, Russia rolled on their rhythm to win the hard-fought first set 25-23.

The second set was almost the same, with both sides taking turns leading. However, unbeaten Russia, which have yet dropped a single set to their respective rivals in the group round-robin preliminaries, struggled to hit form as they had to trail the tough rivals all the way. After catching them up at 23-23, the tall and towering Russians kept the Iranians flat-footed with their exceptional spikes before winning the set with the same margin 25-23.

Their confidence sky-high after the two-set win, Russians, whose height average is 201cm against Irans 193, still proved too strong for Iran. They controlled the game well, with Danilov carrying powering jump serves and Alexei Ostapenko uncorking a series of sharp cross-court smashes. Russia effortlessly won the set 25-16.
