Brazil beat U.S.A. 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-20) - duration 1:14
14-Nov, start time: 12:30, end time: 13:44 - Attendance: 1,501
Brazil went out hard and strong to hit the USA with any missile at their disposal and when they ran up a substantial 15-8 lead in the opening set, looked like making it a one-sided match. The USA trailed 9 points in the final stages and just as Brazil could do no wrong the USA defense was full of holes. Brazil wasted no time in closing out 25-15. It was the most dismal set for the Americans so far in this 11-match round robin series. Brazil was a well coordinated and effective unit and took an immediate lead in the second set. The Americans found few gaps in the block and made too many errors to trail 4-9. USA brought on big hitting Nancy Metcalf but although they scrambled a few points they were still running a12-16 deficit. Virna Dias was monumental and Erika accurate, while Raquel and Walewska let few shots past their defense of the net to put Brazil 22-18 in front. Some good action by Metcalf and Logan Tom allowed the USA to close to within a point before Brazil delivered the killer for 25-22 and 2-0. The remaining set was also tough for the USA, still trailing at 16-21 and although the Americans occasionally got the measure of the Brazilian attack, it was too little too late and Brazil, with a dazzling display of technical skills and deception, pounded their way to 25-20 and a straight sets victory.
